Judging by everything, the time has come when the texts and additional information for the descriptions of the hillforts must be carefully evaluated.
In recent days, there has been communication with specialists close to the National Cultural Heritage Board (NKMP) and archaeology, which I highly value, because I appreciate it as user feedback on whether the page is easy to use, the information is easy to find and correct.
As an autodidact, I learn on the job, so the initial approach to creating content must also be changed so as not to create legal problems that could threaten the existence of the Project in its current format.
I can agree or disagree with many things, legal formulations, but the main thing is to try to navigate through the many legal underwater rocks in order to preserve and continue to develop the Project.
As a result of the consultations, I have set the following tasks, the solution of which has already been partially started, but was not a priority:
- removal of photographs of unknown authors from publications (there have been legal precedents in Latvia when even an old photograph has an author or the author’s descendants who are ready to initiate legal proceedings);
- removal of the content of the NKMP archive file summaries. Archive files are considered working documents (raw data) that may contain private data, the publication of which may have legal consequences;
literary processing of texts. Initially, the same descriptions of E. Brastiņš were inserted according to the “copy / paste” principle from electronic versions of books, where the text was not always correctly processed by the optical recognition method. I also plan to rework this text in accordance with the modern Latvian language. - removal of a bunch of additional materials from the descriptions. For example, there is no need to republish materials from archaeological expeditions. I will provide hyperlinks or “links” to places where they can be found;
- marking objects in registered / unregistered / real / fake hillforts, etc. There is a lot of informational mush in the same NKMP register, in which a hillfort registered may not actually be a hillfort at all, etc. (for example, Sudrabsala in Lake Jugla);
- improving the search functionality. it may happen that the search engine currently “returns” a not quite correct result;
- arranging the toolbars to make the information layout more logical;
- technical issues need to be resolved to optimize the speed of the Page.
When performing these tasks, I will try not to make the Project too dry and scientific, because I want to keep it as a repository of informational materials for the “ordinary person”.
